GEO and AI search optimization for ecommerce, explained

heysteff is an AI platform for customer support and sales across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Gmail and Shopify; Steff is the AI agent that runs it. This article explains, with no hype, what GEO is (Generative Engine Optimization, also called AI Search Optimization or AISO): the discipline of making AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity understand your business precisely and mention you when someone asks them something relevant.

◆ the thesis

Classic SEO competes for a spot on a list of links. GEO competes for being the cited answer inside a conversation.

What GEO/AISO is

More and more people no longer type a keyword into a search engine and click a blue result: they ask an AI assistant directly — "which platform should I use to handle WhatsApp with AI?", "what's a good alternative to X?" — and get a written answer, sometimes with one or two brands mentioned and cited as sources. GEO is the work of making sure that, when this happens in your category, the assistant has clear, verifiable, well-structured information about your business so it can mention you accurately.

It isn't magic or a one-time trick: it is, in essence, giving a language model the same kind of clarity you would give a new hire who needs to understand what you do, for whom, and why — without ambiguity.

How it differs from classic SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking algorithm: how many backlinks you have, how fast your page loads, how well your copy matches a specific keyword. The goal is to appear at the top of a list of ten results that the user still has to open and read one by one.

GEO optimizes for something different: a language model being able to extract, understand and cite a concrete fact about your business inside an answer that's already written out. There, backlinks matter less and entity consistency matters more — your name, your channels, your prices and your features being stated the same way everywhere — along with the information being in a format a model can parse with confidence, not guess at.

Concrete tactics

  • An llms.txt file. A structured, direct summary of who you are, what you offer and at what price, built for a model to read without having to interpret design or marketing.
  • Structured data (JSON-LD). Organization, Product, FAQPage markup and the like, so the information doesn't depend on the model "understanding" your page's visual design.
  • Citable content. Clear, self-contained sentences that answer a whole question in one or two lines, instead of ambiguous paragraphs that need extra context to make sense.
  • Honest comparisons. Pages that compare your product against alternatives in a verifiable way, including when the other option may be the better fit — AI models tend to trust and cite sources that don't sell themselves without nuance.
  • Verifiable trust signals. Real contact information, clear policies, consistency between what your site says and what your other pages say — nothing a model could flag as contradictory or unreliable.

Meta-transparency: heysteff applies this on its own site

We practice what this article describes. heysteff.com publishes its own llms.txt, uses consistent JSON-LD on every page — with the same Organization entity linked across the whole site — and writes its product comparisons honestly including the cases where another tool may be the better choice. It's not an abstract promise: it's the exact pattern you just read, applied to this very page.

How to start without rewriting your whole site

You don't need to rebuild an entire site to start with GEO. The order that yields the most results for the least effort is usually: first, a clear, up-to-date llms.txt; second, consistent JSON-LD on the pages that already get traffic; third, checking that pricing, feature and contact information says exactly the same thing everywhere it appears. Only after that is it worth investing in new content written specifically to be cited.
