what is conversational commerce?

Conversational commerce is selling to and supporting customers inside a single chat — WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Messenger — instead of pushing them to a website or a separate form. The customer discovers, asks, decides and buys without leaving the messaging app they already use every day. heysteff is an AI platform for customer support and sales across WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Gmail and Shopify; Steff is the AI agent that runs it.

◆ short definition

Conversational commerce moves the whole buying journey — question, decision and payment — into the same chat where the customer already is.

Why messaging is a natural sales channel

In many markets, and especially across Latin America, WhatsApp and Instagram aren't just another support channel — they're where people already spend much of their day. Before buying, a lot of customers would rather message the brand directly — ask if a size is in stock, request an extra photo, confirm shipping time — than browse a full web catalog and fill out an unfamiliar checkout.

That preference creates an opportunity and a problem at once. The opportunity: an extremely high-converting channel, because the customer arrives with clear intent. The problem: if a brand can only reply by hand, on limited hours and with no view of orders or live stock, every delayed conversation is a sale that cools off or walks to a competitor.

Conversational commerce doesn't replace the online store — it complements it. The catalog, checkout and inventory still live on the ecommerce platform (Shopify, for example); what changes is that the customer can resolve every question and move the purchase forward without leaving the chat.

What a conversational commerce flow looks like

A typical flow has several stages, all inside the same conversation:

  • Discovery: the customer arrives from an ad, an Instagram story or the link in bio, and writes with a specific question ("do you have this in blue?").
  • Inquiry: they ask about price, stock, sizes, shipping times or the returns policy — and expect an immediate answer, not one in hours.
  • Decision: they compare options, ask for a recommendation, maybe send a photo of what they're after.
  • Checkout in the chat: they confirm the order and get a payment link, without rebuilding a cart in another tab.
  • Post-purchase in the same thread: they ask about shipping status or handle a return without re-explaining everything from scratch.

When that flow breaks — the customer waits hours for a reply, or has to repeat their order to a different person each time — conversion drops. Messaging rewards immediacy.

Where AI agents come in

Sustaining conversational commerce at scale — hundreds or thousands of simultaneous conversations, outside office hours — isn't possible with a human team alone. That's where an AI agent for ecommerce comes in: it replies instantly, checks real stock and orders, and moves the customer forward in the buying flow without making them wait. The human team is freed for the cases that genuinely need judgment or a personal close.

This isn't automation for its own sake: a poorly trained agent that answers generically breaks trust as fast as not answering at all. The point of conversational commerce with AI is to sound like the brand and actually resolve things, not to simulate a conversation.

How heysteff handles it

heysteff unifies WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and Shopify in one inbox, with Steff answering in each brand's tone and catalog. Steff can query real stock and orders, recover abandoned carts automatically, and book appointments synced to Google Calendar — all inside the same thread the customer arrived in. When a case calls for it, anyone on the team takes over in one click with copilot mode. Pricing is per resolved conversation — one customer served within 24 hours on any channel — so the cost tracks how many customers you actually helped, not how many messages it took.
